WEPOL by Penz13 set for EWC in LeMans
After announcing rider line-ups for the International Road Racing Championship (IRRC) and the Tourist Trophy at the Isle of Man for 2018 – Penz13 now con rms the continuation in the FIM Endurance World Endurance Championship 2017/2018.
Once Bol d’Or ended in September 2017 the Penz13 crew found itself on the podium and currently in second place of the championship’s overall standing. After the rst round, the team worked hard behind the scenes in order to continue in the EWC.
The main concern besides the nancial backing of this endeavor was securing the best riders who are competitive enough to chase the title. Due to new commitments in the FIM Superstock Championship of regular team rider, Markus Reiterberger, the management was challenged to nd a replacement good enough to step in his place. As the team has a tight relationship with British TAS Racing – which operates a BMW team in the British Superbike (BSB), it wasn’t a long shot to approach Michael Laverty and Christian Iddon to come on board. Both riders always had the desire to race the Endurance this year and after the announcement of the British Superbike Calendar with no clashes in both championships – Laverty and Iddon received the “Green Light” from TAS principal, Philip Neil, to join the Penz13 team.
Many other teams wanted Michael Laverty to sign on to theirs – as the former MotoGP rider showed his speed and talent in various Endurance races on board of the former Honda Legends and YART Yamaha. His BSB team mate, Christian Iddon, was a clear choice for the team. Iddon proved his speed on a BMW in the last two seasons in BSB. The former Supermoto and Supersport World Championship rider also gained Endurance experience by racing the Suzuka eight-hour race in 2017.
The only remaining rider from the Bol d’Or podium is Danny Webb. Against the odds, he showed a tremendous development on the Superbikes by racing the Isle of Man TT and various other road races for the Penz13. He earned his chance and proofed the team that he, as a former Moto3 rider, has some serious talent for the Endurance races. As the fourth rider Czech Marek Cerveny will join in. Already being team mate to Webb in the IRRC with support of WEPOL he is set to complete the lineup for LeMans.
Michael Laverty: “To be honest we have been in discussions for a few years now, nally in 2018 it has become possible to reach an agreement with the Penz13 team. Being back with the Tyco BMW team in BSB opened the doors and luckily there aren’t any clashes in the racing calendars. I am looking forward to joining the Penz13 team as they have a lot of experience and success in endurance racing, and I look forward to adding to that starting at LeMans. I have really enjoyed competing in endurance, even the 24hr events, they are tough but the satisfaction of standing on the podium at the end is fantastic. The Penz13 team is currently 2nd in the overall standings so we have a great base to start from. ”
Christian Iddon: “I am really excited to be joining the WEPOL by Penz13 team for the EWC and to be doing it alongside my BSB Tyco BMW team mate is even better. Both myself and Michael work well together and I think we can bring our knowledge of the BMW from BSB into the EWC. After racing in Suzuka last year I really wanted to do more races in EWC because I enjoy it a lot and I believe it can help me be a better rider. I am grateful to Tyco BMW for allowing me to race with Penz13. Already as a team and as a group of rider we can ght for the title but in endurance anything can happen and LeMans 24hr race will be a big test for us all but I can’t wait to get going.”
Danny Webb: “It seems to become a busy season for me with all the international road racing meetings, the IRRC and now the EWC. I loved the Bol d’Or and standing on the podium was just grand. Now, Michael and Christian who are both ultrafast SBK riders in the team will push me even further. I know LeMans well from Moto3 and its going to be a hard race for both machine and riders.”
Marek Cerveny: “I did not expect to be invited and joining the team so the more excited I am now. I am pretty sure I can learn a lot and improve my overall speed. My goal will be to get as close as possible in matching my teammate’s lap times and it won’t be easy as I never did a 24hr race.”
Rico Penzkofer: “It’s a dream come true and it was hard work to nd the right riders to replace Markus and Alex. Even more challenging is nancing all our operations. In spite of BMW Motorrad Motorsport’s redirection in their support towards the team based on their “Customer Racing” program we still trust on the durability and power of the BMW S1000RR. How we have grown as a team and could not let the chance go after such a great result at Bol d’Or and everyone knows about the passion and desire within the team for Endurance. Thanks to WEPOL, PURAGLOBE, Akrapovic and Pirelli we can now prepare for the second 24hours of the season and hopefully with a great result we can attract further partners for the future.”
