Penz13.com BMW Motorrad Motorsport earns 8 out of 9 podiums in Imatra Road Races in Finland

The Penz13.com BMW Motorrad Motorsport team entered a brand new challenge last weekend and went to Finland, to take part in the Imatra road races of the International Road Racing Championship (IRRC). The squad fielded three BMW S 1000 RR bikes, equipped with Touratech suspension. Besides Dan Kneen – who got his and the team’s first TT podium this year by taking third in the Superstock TT – and Alessandro “Alex” Polita, a team’s familiar face was back in the mix: For Imatra Michael Rutter stepped in to join the crew.

First IRRC Superbike race was won by Michael Rutter, only 0.215 seconds shy of his team mate Dan Kneen, with Alex Polita a further 0.029 seconds adrift in third, making it a 1-2-3 for team penz13.com. It was the best birthday gift team principal Rico Penzkofer could have asked for. How exciting the race was shows, that the first nine riders where only separated by 1.2 seconds at the flag.

The second encounter was another successful one for the penz-trio and another hard fought one. In the Superbike Open race, it was Dan Kneen who got the better ending over Michael Rutter – by just 0.016 seconds. Third again was Italian Alex Polita, only 0.280 shy of the win and his team mates.

The third race of the weekend for the Penz squad ended with Alex Polita in second position, leaving the win to IRRC championship leader Sebastien Le Grelle from Belgium. Polita missed the win by only 0,653 seconds. Michael Rutter completed the podium in third, a further 0.833 seconds down on Polita. Dan Kneen had to miss the podium by almost a second but still finished in strong fourth position.

Dan Kneen:
“It was my first visit here to Imatra and I am more than happy with the outcome. Of course I would have loved to have another podium in the last race, but you can’t be unhappy with a second, a win and a fourth on a new track, can’t you? Its been a mega experience to ride here, especially in the summer with the sun almost not hiding. The track is really nice as is the backdrop. Our BMW S 1000 RR worked brilliantly as did the tires and the Touratech suspension. Those guys are doing a mega job and I am looking forward to the next races already.”

Alex Polita:
“I am speechless. I had a great time here in Imatra. It was my first time here, as it was for the team and we got a total of 8 out of 9 podiums. I was in the top three in all three races that we competed in and considering I am still a newcomer to Road Racing this is a feat I could have never dreamed of. It is just a pity I missed the win in the second IRRRC encounter on Sunday, as I had prepared my move on Sebastien already, but he missed the chicane and got like a 50 metres advantage which I could not close anymore. Anyways I am happy about my podiums and want to thank everyone in the team Penz13.com, at BMW Motorrad and Touratech.”

Michael Rutter:
“First of all I thank the whole Penz13-team for having me back on their bikes here at Imatra. We did a couple of our racing history together and they remain a good bunch of people and I always love to ride for them. To repay their faith with a win, a second and a third is just a mega feeling. I am also happy that as a team we could get together 8 out of 9 possible podiums, so happy birthday Rico and well done to all the boys in this squad.”

Rico Penzkofer:
“It’s been a mega successful weekend for us – we brought home 8 out of 9 possible podium positions with our three riders. All of them where very close all the time and fought also hard against each other. All were equipped with Stock-spec BMW S 1000 RR bikes and the electronic suspension of Touratech – where we want to leave a big thank you to those guys, as they did an amazing job! In the last race, Alex could have won, but Le Grelle missed the chicane and catched himself an advantage of approximately 50 metres and Alex had no chance to regain that. As he didn’t make up any places, race direction did not react and Alex missed the win. He was very upset about this but still it was a great result. We fell in love with the race here and the organization at Imatra, they are doing their very best and giving their all. It’s been a mega weekend and all our three riders already said that they want to come back here next year. For my personal side it was the best birthday present ever on Saturday to see all our three guys on the podium – and see them repeating that on Sunday and having Alex and Michael on the podium three times was just amazing. It has also been a good preparation for Frohburg, which is the next preparation for Macau. We are all highly motivated for the rest of the season – and to see Danny Webb back in action very soon. He is already motivated to step back on the bike after his crash at the TT and now has seen what is possible with our bikes, so he already called and said he is ready to fight again.”
